Red Sox to Pay Tribute to Jackie Robinson Tonight
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s breaking the Major League Baseball color barrier on Sunday.
The tribute to Robinson was originally set to take place last Sunday, when all of Major League Baseball celebrated the Hall of Famer’s major league debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. However, the Red Sox-Angels game was rained out that day, necessitating the rescheduling to tonight.
Three members of the Red Sox will wear number 42 on Sunday: outfielder Coco Crisp, designated hitter David Ortiz, and third base coach DeMarlo Hale. Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig has temporarily lifted the official retirement of Robinson’s uniform number 42 for this anniversary. That number was retired throughout the Major Leagues on April 15, 1997.
The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Professor Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., a Professor of Law and the Founder and Executive Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School. Professor Ogletree has demonstrated a career-long commitment to diversity and equal justice. Professor Ogletree will be accompanied to the mound by former Red Sox pitcher Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd.
The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America will be sung by Jackie Robinson Scholar Adriana Lee, a student at Rutgers University.
In addition, the Red Sox will honor three of the team’s Diverse Business Partners with its first annual Most Valuable Diverse Business Partners Award: Causemedia, Park Plaza Travel, and Storreytime. The Red Sox will also recognize SOS with a special Supplier Support Award.
